Recently a Russian site, T Journal, reported that it had discovered a ‘Live’ logo in their Instagram ‘Stories’ feed. It also showcased what it claimed to be a live video capture camera screen with the words ‘GoInsta’.

The images and video that they released don’t immediately jump out as looking real…but let’s just play along for now as it is a nice idea.

Here is what people are talking about:

Convinced? Either way, they make an interesting point. Live video does seem like a sensible step for Instagram to make, especially after all the effort that Facebook (who own Instagram) have put into their live video functionality. The ‘Schedule’ button shown in their top right hand corner would seem like a sensible addition as Facebook have released a similar feature for verified pages.

Instagram Live is inevitable, especially as Mark Zuckerberg is such a fan of live video. Facebook recently updated their algorithm to prioritise live videos and in an interview with FastCo Mark said: “we’re going to be in a world a few years from now where the vast majority of the content that people consume online will be video.”

When Instagram released it’s ‘Stories’ feature earlier this year, it was painfully obvious that they were taking aim at the huge Snapchat user base (They even named it the same thing!). After such a brazen example of: “anything you can do, I can do better”, why wouldn’t Instagram also target hugely popular live video apps like Periscope and Meercat?

Maybe it is time to start thinking about how your company can use live video – on both Facebook and Instagram – to deliver interesting content to your followers and customers.

What do you think? Do you expect to see live video on Instagram any time soon?  Does it matter? Does this kickstart any new ideas for ways to interact with your Instagram followers?
